What Is Chilcuague?

Chilcuague is a unique medicinal plant with beautiful flowers and long leaves that is native to Mexico, specifically north-central Mexico.

It’s primarily grown in the states of Guanajuato, San Luis Potosí, and Querétaro in north-central Mexico.

It thrives in the semi-arid climate and specific soil conditions found in these areas.

Some people may be more familiar with Chilcuague when it is referred to by its scientific name, Heliopsis longipes, which is in the family Asteraceae.

Chilcuague is pronounced as “cheel-KWAH-geh.”

History and Cultural Significance

Chilcuague has long been valued for its medicinal properties.

Indigenous peoples used it to treat various medical ailments, including muscle aches, toothaches, respiratory problems, and more.

In addition to its medicinal uses, it’s also used in different culinary dishes and alcoholic beverages.

Used either for its medicinal properties or to add flavor, Chilcuague was quite influential.

According to Mara Organic, “The cultural significance of Chilcuague extends beyond its medicinal properties, with the plant being regarded as sacred and symbolizing strength, protection, and healing in certain cultures.”

It was even added to elixirs and potions for rejuvenation and strengthening.

Chilcuague Medicinal Uses

  • Oral Health: Chewing on the root can numb pain and relieve toothaches. It can also be used to treat swollen, bleeding gums or gingivitis. It is helpful for overall oral hygiene.
  • Digestive Health: The Aztecs used Chilcuague to expel intestinal parasites, and it continues to be used for other types of digestive health issues today. It’s useful for treating digestive issues such as indigestion, stomach discomfort, gastritis, and bloating. It is also used to improve bowel movements and detoxify the body.
  • Respiratory Health: Chilcuague is used to alleviate symptoms of colds, such as sore throat, coughing, and congestion. This is because it clears the sinuses and reduces inflammation. For example, an oral throat spray containing Chilcuague works by numbing and reducing inflammation in the throat. Moreover, just chewing on the root of the plant can stimulate the tingly, numbing feeling to ease throat pain. Nasal sprays containing the plant work similarly.
  • Pain Relief: Chilcuague is used as a natural remedy for pain relief, such as reducing joint pain and easing inflammation. Studies have shown that it has “higher anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic effects” than some prescription medications. Additionally, it can be used to treat muscle soreness and tension.
  • Immune System Support: Chilcuague is believed to strengthen the immune system and prevent illness. For this reason, many people consume it regularly to boost their immune systems and help fight off infections.
  • Anti-Inflammatory Properties: Chilcuague is used to treat skin conditions like eczema, rashes, and insect bites. According to Mara Organics, “Studies have identified active compounds present in the plant, such as flavonoids and terpenoids, which have demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects in laboratory settings. […] Chilcuague has shown potential as an analgesic, or pain-relieving, agent. Some studies suggest that the plant’s active compounds interact with pain receptors in the body, potentially reducing pain sensations.” Additionally, it is used for wound healing because of its ability to reduce inflammation and promote tissue repair when used as poultices or topical creams. “Some studies suggest that Chilcuague extracts may accelerate wound healing by increasing collagen production and enhancing the migration of skin cells.”
  • Antioxidant Benefits: Chilcuague is used in natural skincare because of its antioxidant properties, which protect against aging. The medicinal plant’s antioxidant properties help neutralize harmful free radicals that harm the skin and cause premature aging.

Culinary Uses

Chilcuague is used to flavor many dishes in Mexico. It is commonly used as a substitute for hot pepper in Mexican dishes.

In addition, it’s often added to spice blends to bring a unique flavor profile.

For example, if you want to add it to your diet, you can use it as a marinade seasoning or a meat rub.

Another way Chilcuague can be incorporated into your diet is by drinking it as an herbal tea.

Simply steep the dried root in boiling water for a few minutes and enjoy. This herbal tea is used to aid digestive health.

Chilcuague is also added to different tonic beverages with the promise of boosting overall health.

How to Use Chilcuague

There are different ways to use Chilcuague depending on the need.

For example, you can chew the root directly for pain relief.

When you chew the root, it will make you salivate strongly. Shortly after, you will experience a numbing, tingling sensation.

However, you must prepare it when adding it to culinary dishes, teas, or tinctures.

In order to add it to tea, you simply steep the root in boiling water.

If you are using it to make a tincture, you will need to prepare the tincture.

According to Lasszamana, “To prepare a tincture, soak the root in alcohol (preferably high-proof) and let it macerate for a few weeks. After this time, strain the tincture and store it in a dark place.”
